At Woodenbong Central School, our teachers actively participate in professional learning to effectively support the diverse needs of all students, including those who are high potential and gifted. Our faculties from Kindergarten to Year 12 nurture the talents of these students, resulting in a range of notable achievements. These include participation in the Regional Spelling Bee, music performances at the Casino and Kyogle Performing Arts Festivals, and soon, involvement in the School Spectacular dance groups.

Year 10 Measurement Project: Designing Tiny Clay Houses

Our Year 10 measurement project, which involved designing and constructing miniature clay houses, beautifully showcased the principles of the Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) framework. This hands-on project provided students with opportunities to engage in complex problem-solving, creativity, and applied reasoning.

Through authentic measurement tasks - such as working with scale, area, volume, and proportional reasoning -students made thoughtful design decisions and refined their models through continuous iteration. The open-ended nature of the challenge encouraged high-potential learners to deepen their understanding and extend their thinking beyond standard curriculum boundaries.

By applying mathematical concepts in a practical context, students not only strengthened their intellectual skills but also explored their creativity, perfectly supporting the dual focus of the HPGE framework. This project exemplifies our commitment to fostering both academic excellence and innovative thinking in our students.

Across Our School

At Woodenbong Central School, we recognise that every student is unique. We offer flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and develop their strengths both inside and outside the classroom.

Our annual Variety Night is a highlight where our high potential and gifted students showcase their talents through performances to their families and the wider Woodenbong community. Students can also enhance their skills through individual music instruction.

In the primary school, we run lunchtime Dance and Choir programs alongside HPGE interest groups, providing students with creative outlets and opportunities to perform.

The Premier’s Debating Challenge builds critical thinking, teamwork, and persuasive speaking skills, while our leadership and public speaking programs empower school captains and speakers to gain confidence and influence.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge promotes literacy and a love of literature across all year groups. Meanwhile, the Premier’s Spelling Bee encourages vocabulary development, accuracy, and confidence through a school based spelling bee competition.

Our Careers and VET Program offers students the chance to complete TAFE courses online or on campus, plus engage in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. Through partnerships with Northern Rivers Connect, students can obtain important qualifications such as the WHS White Card. Throughout the year, students participate in careers excursions including the Careers Expo, university and TAFE roadshows, and university visits, helping them explore diverse career pathways.

Students studying hospitality develop and display their skills in our weekly café and cater for school formals and events.

Our HPGE Interest Groups run fortnightly sessions for students from Kindergarten to Year 6, extending their passion and talents in specialised areas. For Years 5 to 8, weekly choice-based Interest Electives spark curiosity and creativity.

Senior students in Year 11 and 12 have opportunities to develop leadership skills through Sport Lifestyle and Recreation, while Year 9 and 10 students participate in Physical Activity and Sports Studies, taking on official roles at carnivals and sporting gala events. Many have completed refereeing courses and officiate at regional and state touch football events.

Interested students have the opportunity to participate in Shooting for Sport, where they first complete a comprehensive shooting safety course and apply for a firearm permit. Following this, students receive weekly coaching in the Down the Line shooting discipline, developing their skills in a safe and supportive environment.

From Kindergarten to Year 12, students compete in representative sports, excelling in school, zone, regional and state carnivals. We encourage participation in juvenile competitions to build sporting skills and confidence. Woodenbong Central School regularly applies for Sporting Schools grants, enabling us to engage specialised coaches across sports such as netball, futsal, touch football, swimming, AFL, and rugby league.

Our Computing Technology elective allows students to extend their skills in coding and 3D game building.

Agriculture is a compulsory subject for all students in Years 7 and 8, providing foundational knowledge and skills in this important area. Students passionate about agriculture can continue to select it as an elective from Years 9 to 12, where they further develop skills in animal husbandry and plant production and prepare livestock for agricultural shows on our school farm.

Through the Rural Learning Exchange Program, senior students connect with peers and teachers from other small rural schools to enhance their learning experiences. We also partner with the Southern Cross School of Distance Education to offer bespoke curriculum pathways tailored to individual student needs.

Across NSW

Our Dance and Choir groups, alongside our HPGE interest groups, have proudly represented Woodenbong Central School at the Kyogle/Casino Performing Arts Festival. This success has inspired our staff and students as they look forward to performing at The Schools Spectacular in 2026, an extraordinary event showcasing the talents, diversity, and creativity of students from Woodenbong Central School and across NSW public schools.

We have a strong partnership with the local Githabul Rangers through the Junior Ranger Program. This valuable collaboration provides students with opportunities, where they learn about environmental stewardship and the vital role the Githabul Rangers play in our community. Additionally, students have completed work experience with the Rangers, gaining practical skills and a deeper understanding of conservation and land management.

Our Agriculture Show Team has had the opportunity to show cattle and sheep and judge at agricultural shows in the Group 1 of the NSW Ag Show Society. This experience has enabled students to qualify and compete at state level at the prestigious Royal Easter Show.

Our students regularly participate in the Premier’s Debating, Spelling, and Reading Challenges, competing at zone and regional levels to enhance their skills and confidence.

The Premier’s Sporting Challenge encourages whole-school participation in physical activity and fitness, helping students build confidence in their sporting abilities.

Through PSSA and CHSSA sports events, our students have the opportunity to trial and compete in sports at zone, regional, and national levels. These competitions foster discipline, commitment, and teamwork within their sporting pursuits. Woodenbong Central School also advocates juvenile sporting extension programs at district level, supporting athletes to reach their full potential.

Students from Woodenbong Central School compete at the Australian Futsal Association competitions across NSW. They have participated in school teams, and some have been selected to compete at a national level, where they have been selected to compete at an international level.

Shooting for Sport students have competed in competitions across NSW and Queensland. Each year, they travel to Tamworth to compete in the Northern NSW School Down the Line Championship, showcasing their skills in this specialised discipline.

In Technology and Applied Studies (TAS), students have been invited to exhibit their Major Projects at the InTech display, where the highest-scoring Industrial Technology projects are judged by TAS teachers.

To support the wellbeing of our High Potential and Gifted (HPG) students, we implement the Stepped Care model. This approach connects students with dedicated support staff and mentors, providing personalised guidance to enhance their overall wellbeing and academic success.
